How often do you say "um"?
- Um…a lot.
- Not very often. I usually just jump in with more words!
Do you say "I guess," or, "That's my opinion," often?
- I only do that if I know the people around me are annoyed by what I said.
- No, I usually just say what I mean.
- I don’t always feel confident enough to put my opinion out there unless I add something like “I guess.”
- No, I just say the facts. If other people are bothered that’s their problem.
Does your voice go up at the ends of sentences if they're not questions?
- No.
- Yes?
How do you say hello to people?
- “Hello.”
- I wave.
- “Hey!!”
- “Yo.”
Do you ask a lot of questions?
- Yes! I really like to know about people, so I ask them about themselves.
- If I’m interested in the subject matter.
- No, I’m awful at asking questions. I always remember after a conversation that I should ask about other people.
- Not really. I spend a lot of time talking about myself.
You want to change the topic in the middle of a conversation. How do you do it?
- “Oh! Remember the other day when we were talking about…”
- Not very artfully. I usually just start talking about the other thing.
- “So speaking of…”
- “Did you know that…”
Do you use euphemisms very often?
- A lot. It’s just more polite.
- Only around my family.
- I don’t understand the point of them. If people are offended by something, they’re not adult enough to talk about it.
- Not very often. I find they obscure communication.
Do you ever make up your own words?
- I love to! It’s so cool to have my own private language.
- No, what would be the point? No one can understand it.
- I like to combine other words to create something for new concepts.
- I’ll make up a language with a friend, but not on my own.
How often do you adjust your language to match the person you're talking to (e.g. speak differently to a child than to an adult)?
- Doesn’t everyone? I definitely change the words I use and the tone I use for the person I’m speaking to.
- I speak pretty much the same way to everyone.
Do you make promises freely?
- I’m careful with promises because I take them seriously, but I make them fairly often.
- No. I don’t owe other people things.
- I never feel a need to promise things. I’d rather just do it.
- I make a lot of promises, but I want to do a lot of things for people.
Do you interrupt others?
- Constantly. I’m very bad at figuring out how not to speak over others.
- No, I’m too intimidated to try so I often end up cut out of conversations.
- Not too regularly, but sometimes when a lot of people are getting excited at once.
- Usually pretty minimally.
Do you prefer to talk in a large group or with one or two people?
- Large group
- Small group or one on one
Last question - how would you rate this quiz?
